das cover hält zwar nicht unbedingt, was sich der lüsterne betrachter spätestens beim blick auf titel wie »drink my honey«, »the wet dream« und »dirty willy« von der musik versprechen könnte, liefert aber einen überaus tanzbaren industrial-house-mix.
mit hilfe des gesampelten gitarrenbretts von niemand geringerem als luc van acker und dem groovigen zusammenspiel zwischen drumcomputern und synthie-themen ergibt sich letztendlich eine durchaus massenkompatible mischung, die mit ruths multifunktionalitäts-gesang geradezu garniert wird. zwischendurch lockert dann auch mal ein an nina hagens »african reggae« erinnerndes »marijuana in your brain« die szenerie auf, ehe es kurz darauf wieder mit härteren sequenzern und uptempo-breakbeats weitergeht.

the newest 12inch on voodoo down records marks the debut appearance of longtime friend of the label jordan lieb aka black light smoke. jordan played an instrumental part in the nyc label scissor & thread, and has spent recent years honing his live set in front of crowds ranging from bpm, robot heart, and fabric. the depression sleeping ep is a collection of tracks from his archives from the past decade that have been updated and remixed. the theme of the record is his struggle with sleep and insomnia. per the artist: releasing these songs form my past reflects my effort to embrace myself, the good and the bad, and to channel my personal battles into a creative process.

uk deep house legend nail returns to monologues records for a full release after his sublime decisions featured on the dialogue vol. 2 various artists 12- at the end of last year. ever consistent, he delivers two deliciously deep gems. voodoo is a low-down chugger, chunky beats doing battle with disco and soul samples in hypnotic effect. on wid it also oozes soul in its vocal sample and twinkling keys, a garage tinge to its groove. g. markus steps up for the remix of voodoo , keeping things rolling and injecting a big groove of a bassline into the proceedings.

next up on voodoo gold is the debut release by aquarian motion. beyond the pillars of hercules is a 9 track mixture of classic aquatic electro and deep mellow machine funk.

voodoo down returns to the compilation series that started it all: possible side effects vol.1, released in late 2012, was the first release on the brooklyn-based label and marked the inception of a concept ep series that would come to define the labels sound. featuring an a1 cut by german journeyman producer stl and rounded out by the label founders’ eclectic techno styles, pse vol. i was the perfect vehicle for the producers still working to carve out their own individual aesthetic. now with a dozen releases under their belt, the founders l estasi dell oro, nconduit and 12 x 12 have returned to their roots and this time recruited the prolific berlin-based producer deadbeat for volume three of the series. like the first two volumes, its a slightly chaotic mix of beefy dance floor tools and heady experimentation. the separate personalities shine through more than ever on this release. vdr always striving to keep things interesting.

them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka’s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.

for their tenth release, voodoo down has again chosen to debut a new act to add to their label roster. andy harper and nic ford have been making music together for over a decade but began releasing in earnest under the name maddermodes in 2014 on their own label, shift coordinate points. they have since put out records on the labels millions of moments and night drive music. their handful of releases have already drawn support from top names like move d and nick höppner, and its clear that the duos sound is only getting more refined with each successive record. the ep entitled emprical evidence is a wholly cinematic piece of work, spread across four tracks that unravel slowly, unified by a theme of pumping syncopated rhythms under sprawling pad and string progressions. its easy to get lost in the thick arrangements, and the inventive use of samples and melodic elements invite repeat listening. equally suitable for early morning hours, ultra-deep techno sets, or quiet home listening sessions.

the sophomore ep by label head n conduit. the name and inspiration for the pumps ep is derived from new yorks infamous strip club, pumps. located on the border of queens and brooklyn on the english kills canal, its one of the last holdouts of seedy and unkempt brooklyn, now that the high rises and artisanal establishments have taken over. the pumps ep consists of three original tracks and a remix that are supposed to capture whats left of this through raw analog sequences and drum programming.
